Career Services

careerservices@txstate.edu
LBJ Student Center 5-7.1 | 512.245.2645

Assisting students in all phases of their career decision-making process is the sole function of Career Services. The department's programs and resources are designed specifically to guide tomorrow's professionals through self-assessment, career exploration, reality-testing and implementation. Career Services offers help with everything from deciding on a major to finding a part-time job or full-time employment opportunities.

One-on-one counseling appointments are available to discuss your career concerns, review your résumé, or practice your interviewing skills. Students often come in to discuss which majors or careers fit them best. While guiding students through this exploration process, Career Services staff pay particular attention to student's interests, skills, values, and personalities.

Career tests such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Strong Interest Inventory and the Self-Directed Search are also available through a Career Services counselor. A free, online testing option, SIGI3, also offers career tests and includes information about career options, job outlooks and starting salaries. You may access SIGI3 without counselor appointment by obtaining an access token by phone or e-mail from Career Services.

For your convenience, walk-in career coaching is available, as is a drop-off for 24-hour résumé review. The Career Information Center is equipped with 10 personal computers and hundreds of career-related books and periodicals.

But what about the "experience" everyone wants? Summer employment, job shadowing and internships are excellent ways to network, gain exposure to an occupation, and test out career choices. Job shadowing, scheduled during the winter break, typically involves a one-day, several-day or weeklong experience. Internships normally allow for lengthier experience a summer term, a semester, or even longer and often count for academic credit.

Career Services assists students in obtaining all types of employment. Current openings, including part-time on- and off-campus jobs, full-time positions, summer jobs and internships can be accessed by registering with Jobs4Cats, which you can link to from www.careerservices.txstate.edu.

Career Services also offers an array of services to facilitate the professional job search, for both active students and Texas State alumni. Résumé reviews and practice interviews can help you better meet employer expectations and more effectively demonstrate your qualifications. Job postings, job fairs, on-campus interviews and a variety of special programs (e.g., workshops in Interviewing Skills, Job Search Preparation, and Business Etiquette) provide an abundance of opportunities to make contact with potential employers. And don't miss the chance to network with employers at the 12 job fairs offered annually by Career Services.

San Marcos Office: 1901-A Dutton
512.396.7930 | 800.687.8442
john.grayson@dars.state.tx.us

The Division of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) is a state agency that assists individuals with disabilities by providing a variety of services to them as they enter employment or return to work. For students with disabilities, DRS advocates completing a degree is the best way to become employed.

DRS works with all disabilities, including physical and orthopedic impairments, mental health disabilities, epilepsy, learning disabilities, diabetes, deaf and hearing impairments, speech/language impairments, attention deficit problems, and most other disabilities.

Services may include:

  • assessment of disability, including a review of existing records that document a disability or provision of a psychological evaluation or medical evaluation to document the disability
  • counseling and guidance
  • assistance in obtaining accommodations and other supportive services
  • assistive devices such as artificial limbs, braces and hearing aids
  • limited financial assistance for tuition and nonrefundable required fees, and some limited financial assistance for required books and supplies
  • medical and psychiatric treatment, including physical therapy and speech therapy
  • interpreter services for the deaf

These services are based on meeting eligibility criteria and economic need as determined on an individual basis by a DRS counselor. The existence of a disability does not automatically mean an individual is eligible for DRS services; the disability must be a barrier to obtaining or maintaining employment, or in the case of students, progressing toward completion of their degrees, to be followed by employment in their chosen fields.

J.C. Kellam, Ste. 980 | 512.245.2152
mentoring@txstate.edu

The University Mentoring Program matches interested incoming students with faculty, staff, or peer mentors in the campus community. These mentors establish one-to-one relationships that provide encouragement and support to enhance the new student's experience at Texas State and ease the transition to university life. Students learn what a valuable resource a friend on campus can be when questions arise concerning registration, financial aid, academic advising, rapport with professors, or even how to get more involved in campus life.

In addition to making a supportive friend and advisor and gaining knowledge about valuable campus resources, mentored students excel academically. Institutional research shows that mentored students earn higher grade point averages and achieve higher retention rates during their first semester in college than do their peers who do not participate in the University Mentoring Program.

Student Learning Assistance Center (SLAC)

www.txstate.edu/slac
Alkek Library, Ste. 411 | 512.245.2515

Texas State's Student Learning Assistance Center (SLAC) provides a wide range of academic support programs for the needs of our diverse student population. Whether students are seeking help with course content, study skills, or test preparation, SLAC provides assistance with a walk-in tutoring lab, Supplemental Instruction, campus presentations, and online services.

Texas State students can take advantage of tutoring services by visiting the Learning Lab. The SLAC Lab gives academic assistance in accounting; sciences such as physics, biology, and chemistry; English and writing; statistics; computer information systems; history; philosophy; languages such as Spanish; and a number of math courses.

The lab also contains study materials, handouts, and computer-assisted instructional software in a wide range of topics and levels, from correcting comma splices to preparing for graduate school. Students may also visit SLAC for assistance in preparing for the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) test and admissions tests for graduate (GRE), law (LSAT), and business (GMAT) colleges as well as Texas State department tests such as the School of Journalism and Mass Communication's Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation (GSP) exam.

Supplemental Instruction, a nontraditional approach to collaborative learning, provides structured group study for students in historically challenging courses ranging from the liberal arts, such as History 1310 and 1320, to science and math-based courses, including Chemistry 1341 and 1342, as well as selected honors courses. Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SIs) act as role models and facilitate multiple study sessions per week in order to assist students not only with course content but also with the development of positive study skills and habits.

SLAC staff members continually foster outreach in their campus community by providing informational and interactive presentations on topics such as test taking and anxiety, learning styles, time management, and college note taking. Upon request, SLAC's staff will design specialized programs about study skills and academic improvement to fit the needs of a campus club, organization, or professor. In addition, SLAC works to facilitate the College Note Taking session of PAWS Preview by showing incoming freshmen students proper techniques and giving tips for successfully navigating a college lecture.

SLAC also provides Texas State Students with a number of online resources. By simply visiting www.txstate.edu/slac, students can access the Learning Lab's tutoring schedule and hours, the times and locations of Supplemental Instruction sessions, information regarding becoming a lab tutor or SI Leader, content area handouts, and test preparation materials. SLAC also maintains an Online Writing Lab (OWL) and a Math Online Lab (MOL), providing tutoring in an electronic format.
